The Kharkhana drive was NKF's first-ever shoe distribution — the moment our mission moved from a vision on paper to a reality on the ground. We identified Government Girls Primary School, Kharkhana after learning that a significant number of its students walked to school barefoot, exposing them daily to injury, infection, and the quiet indignity of going without.
Volunteers arrived early that morning to sort, size, and arrange shoes before the children even stepped into the hall. The school staff were warm and welcoming, having seen firsthand the challenges their students faced. When the children came forward — some hesitant, some beaming — the atmosphere in the room shifted. One little girl tried on her shoes, walked a few steps, and looked back at her teacher with wide eyes. That single moment became the spirit of everything NKF stands for.
The drive was a proof of concept, a learning experience, and a deeply moving afternoon all at once. It showed us that the need is real, the impact is immediate, and the path forward is clear.
Our second drive, held on 6 February 2026 at Government School, Bholakpur, was everything the first drive taught us to be — more organised, more joyful, and even more impactful. Bholakpur is a densely populated locality with a high concentration of daily-wage families. For many of the children here, school shoes are an unaffordable luxury.
Preparation began days in advance. Volunteers coordinated with the school principal to understand the number of children needing shoes and their approximate sizes. On the morning of the drive, teams arrived with pre-sorted, labelled shoe packets to ensure a smooth distribution. The principal addressed the children, explaining the importance of coming forward, and families who had accompanied their children were visibly moved.
One mother, watching her daughter receive shoes for the first time, held her palms together in quiet gratitude. There were no big speeches — just the simple, powerful image of children walking out of the hall in new shoes. The Bholakpur drive reinforced our belief: the need is vast, and the smallest act of giving can transform a child's day.
Every milestone on this timeline represents children who walk to school a little more safely and a little more confidently.
